Some Eco-friendly options for when the weather outside is frightful...

Wool

Chilly Dog Wool Coats

If you're in search of a classic wool coat in a traditional plaid or southwestern style, Chilly Dog offers a nice selection of hand-made coats created by the Inca Artisans in South America. Following fair trade guidelines, Chilly Dog products are created from mostly natural materials, using plant-based dyes for coloring. Velcro closures at the chest and girth allow for easy on/off as well as provide a measure of adjustability (good for a growing pup or one between sizes).

Sizes range from XS (14 inches long, 8 inches deep) to XXL (26.5 inches long, 16 inches deep) with pricing generally ranging from about $37 to $49, depending on size. You can browse their full selection on the Chilly Dog website. Several options abound, from a stylish black and white plaid, to green and navy  tartan and other traditional plaids as well as a few colorful styles with a nod toward their origins, including a denim sunset, desert sunset and turquoise southwest style. Perhaps some wishful thinking for you or pup on a cold winter day?

Wool & Shearling

Lutti Fashion Designers Wool Coats

Created by women's fashion designers in New York using high quality remnant fabrics from their industry, Lutti's designs, while limited to small dogs at this time, carry a stamp of uniqueness, luxury and style that only the fashion industry can deliver on. Made from 100% wool and 100% shearling (not blended with other fibers), some also sport a sleek suede liner for comfort and style.

Available in a variety of fashionable colors including solids and checks/plaids, most are more neutral tones in classic black/white, grey, burgundy, natural, plaids (such as you'd find in human coats), with a few brighter colors starting to be added to the line. All sport exquisite detailing such as collars that can be turned up or down, coordinating binding and a back binding strip with D-ring for attaching a leash. Pricing tends to range from $70 to $175, depending on the coat selected, size and materials. Sizes run from 0 (XXS - 5.5-6.5 inch neck, 9.75-10.75 inch girth) to 8 (Medium - 12-14.5 inch neck, 18-20 inch girth), and they have even created a video to help guide you in correctly measuring your own pup. Ruffwear Overcoat

 

For the active outdoorsy pup that is into running through woods and overgrown fields, hiking the trail and running on the beach, the Ruffwear line may be just what you're looking for. With many options made from fabrics derived from recycled products, your pup can be eco-friendly, active-wear stylish and warm. Not to mention, many are designed to be quite durable for pup's outdoor adventures.

The Fuse Overcoat offers a wind, water and abrasion-resistant outer layer (40% recycled) with a cozy fleece inner layer (25% recycled). It's tapered design and ample leg room assure comfort for even the most active pup you'd like to protect from the elements. Sporty piping and a slot for attaching a leash to a harness are nice finishing touches. Currently available in red clay or slate blue, you can order in sizes XXS (13-17 inch girth, 12 inch length) to XL (32-42 inch girth, 28.5 inch length) for $60, regardless of size.

Organic Cotton

Eco-Pup Pacific Spirit Raincoat with Organic Cotton Liner

Let's face it, Mother Nature designed us to get a little wet in the rain, so trying to find a raincoat for the pup who likes rain as much as some people that is totally eco-friendly can be tricky. As a step in the right direction, Eco-Pup out of Canada offers a Pacific Spirit raincoat, made with a waterproof polyurethane laminate (PUL) outer shell over a soft organic cotton liner. Made with easy on/off Velcro closures, you can quickly throw it on for a dash out the door and pull it off again once inside. And, it can be washed and dried, should pup decide wet weather isn't so bad and spend a little time frolicking in mud puddles or digging a new hole in the yard. Ranging in sizes from XS to L, $28 to $48 depending on fabric, the coats are available in vibrant colors, sure to brighten up any dreary day! Linen

Louisdog Reversible Puffer Coat

 

Simplistic straight styling in a cute puffer coat for pup, complete with an eco-friendly linen layer from boutique designer Louisdog. Pup can wear the linen out, or reverse for a sleek nylon outer, keeping the linen next to his coat. 3M™ Thinsulate™ filling ensures pup will stay cozy on cold winter days. Sleeveless, the coat can either be worn alone, or with a long-sleeve shirt under for an extra layer.

Available in blue dots or natural herringbone, each coat features a stand-up fleece collar and snap closure. Hand washing is recommended.
